If accessibility influences your platform choice, compare the pages and purchase flow you will actually ship. A theme demo does not include your product content, installed apps, payment methods, or custom checkout fields. Those choices can change whether a customer can browse and buy.

Review method, September 28, 2026: We compared the platforms’ published documentation, including WooCommerce’s accessibility guidance, Shopify’s theme accessibility requirements, and each platform’s checkout customization rules. We did not conduct the NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, or comparative audit tests previously described on this page. The old test verdicts, app counts, and cost estimates had no supporting record and have been removed. AmazingPlugins makes a WooCommerce accessibility plugin, disclosed below.

Themes and product pages

WooCommerce runs within a WordPress theme and can be extended through templates, hooks, styles, and plugins. Shopify themes use Liquid, CSS, and JavaScript. Both platforms allow theme-level changes. Neither platform makes the finished storefront accessible regardless of the theme and content you add.

WooCommerce says its core provides keyboard and screen reader features, and warns that themes and third-party plugins can override or break them. Shopify’s Theme Store requirements include keyboard access, visible focus, product-image alt attributes, and matched form labels. Those requirements describe what submitted themes must support; a store owner still needs to test the installed theme, custom sections, and product data.

Check a real product page on either platform: can a keyboard user select every variation and add it to the cart? Do images have useful alternatives? Does a screen reader announce price changes, stock messages, and the selected option? Our variation swatches guide gives a WooCommerce-specific test path.

Checkout control

WooCommerce offers the Checkout block and Classic shortcode. Its checkout documentation explains how to switch between them and warns that an incompatible payment gateway can be unavailable in the block checkout. Developers can extend WooCommerce checkout, but an extension can also introduce barriers. Use the Blocks versus Classic checkout checklist to test your actual gateway.

Shopify provides a checkout editor for appearance and supported app customizations. Developers can add UI through checkout extensions, subject to platform APIs and plan limits. Shopify says extensions cannot access or replace arbitrary checkout DOM; checkout-step UI extensions are limited to Shopify Plus. That is a real constraint for a merchant who needs a particular change, but it does not show that Shopify checkout is more or less accessible than a WooCommerce checkout without testing both configured stores.

How to compare a proposed store

TaskWooCommerce questionShopify question
Product variantsDoes the theme or swatch extension expose the option name and selection?Does the chosen theme or app expose them?
Cart changesAre updated quantities and totals announced? Are theme or app updates announced?
CheckoutDoes the installed gateway work with Blocks or Classic, and can customers finish by keyboard?Does the checkout configuration and installed extension preserve a complete keyboard flow?
Fix ownershipIs the barrier in the theme, WooCommerce, a gateway, or another extension? Is it in the theme, app, or platform-controlled checkout?
MaintenanceWho retests after theme, plugin, and gateway updates?Who retests after theme, app, and checkout updates?

On staging stores with the same sample products, complete these tasks using keyboard only, then with a screen reader. Include invalid-field errors, shipping changes, payment selection, and order confirmation. Record the platform and theme versions, apps or plugins, browser, screen reader, and date. Use an automated scanner to find additional issues, then verify the full purchase manually.

Do not use a generic “WCAG compliant platform” badge as the decision. WCAG 2.2 applies to the experience customers receive. The result depends on the configured store, its content, and its ongoing maintenance.

Where AmazingPlugins fits

We publish the free AP Accessibility Fixer for WooCommerce. The released 1.5.1 package has nine targeted fixers. It can help with selected WooCommerce patterns, but its presence does not prove that a theme, checkout gateway, or custom widget is accessible. We do not sell a Shopify equivalent. Check the plugin’s stated scope and test the same purchase tasks after enabling it.

For a broader store audit, start with the WooCommerce accessibility issues guide and the screen reader testing guide.
