Accessibility checker tools: how the options compare

The first question is what you need done. A scanner finds possible issues. An automated remediation product changes selected behavior. A human audit tests interactions and judgment calls. Several vendors combine these jobs, so category labels are a starting point, not a verdict.

Disclosure and method (September 28, 2026): AmazingPlugins publishes WooCommerce Accessibility Fixer. We reviewed the W3C’s evaluation guidance, the vendors’ public product pages below, and our released 1.5.1 package. We did not run these products head to head on one store. This is a scope comparison, not a ranking of results or a legal assessment.

Scanners

Browser tools such as WAVE and axe DevTools can identify many repeatable problems on the page you give them. Ask whether a paid scanner can reach logged-in pages, checkout errors, and dynamic cart states. A finding still needs a fix and a retest. The W3C says automated tools cannot check every accessibility aspect.

Automated remediation and visitor controls

These products vary. accessiBe’s accessWidget describes a visitor interface and automated adjustments. UserWay’s widget also describes automated remediation; UserWay sells monitoring separately. AudioEye lists automated fixes alongside monitoring and expert services. It is inaccurate to say these vendors only draw a toolbar or never fix anything.

Ask which changes apply to your theme and checkout, whether they run only while the product is active, and what the vendor will do about components it cannot reach. For example, accessiBe lists technological limitations for some custom components and non-HTML content.

WooCommerce-targeted plugins

A WordPress plugin may use PHP hooks, filters, CSS, or JavaScript to change known WooCommerce patterns. That can be useful for repeatable issues, but a plugin is not automatically a scanner or full-store audit. It may also depend on runtime scripts. Inspect what a particular release does before counting it as a fix for a criterion.

Our WooCommerce Accessibility Fixer 1.5.1 has nine free fixers for selected issues such as product-image alt fallbacks, focus styling, error messages, landmarks, and skip links. Several use inline scripts or styles. It does not measure text contrast, fix every checkout label, scan a catalog, produce a PDF report, or offer a released Pro tier.

Human audits and custom development

A skilled reviewer can test whether a person can choose a variation, navigate the cart, recover from checkout errors, and pay. Ask for the pages, states, devices, assistive technology, methods, findings, and retest plan. An audit does not itself change the code unless remediation is part of the agreement. The W3C report template shows what a documented evaluation can include.

No row guarantees conformance. WCAG 2.2 concerns full pages and interactions. Run the same purchase flow with each candidate, then compare unresolved barriers and the work required to fix them.

A buying sequence

Run a baseline on product, cart, and checkout pages with a scanner and keyboard.
Group failures by owner: content, theme, extension, payment provider, or tool.
Ask vendors to demonstrate what they can detect and repair on those exact cases.
Get current quotes and confirm what service or human testing is included.
Retest the purchase flow with a screen reader before accepting the result.
